Burglars broke into our house yesterday

Yesterday burglars broke into our house. They kicked open the main door by forcing open the Yale lock on it. Two of the bedroom doors, mine and Rebecca’s, had Yale locks installed on  them individually as well, so we'd really thought that our rooms would be  safe, but what  actually happened was that they'd kicked our doors to the extent that the doorframe broke apart from the doorway, and hence the locks had been kicked open too.

They'd searched all four of our rooms. Luckily no one was at home at the time so no one was hurt. Gaurav called me at 4 and told me that our house had been broken into and that both the locks on me and Rebecca's doors were forced open as well. At the time, I was at my Auntie's in Morden, forty minutes away from Camden (where I live). Ironically, I was also creating a facebook event advertising the house warming party we were planning to have next Friday when I got the call. Gaurav had already called the police and contacted Beca and Alex so we were all hurrying home to see what was missing and to be there when the police came.

They had taken Gaurav's laptop and ipod, and Alex's Hong Kong Wallet with his Hong Kong bank cards and Hong Kong bank notes (thankfully he had his everyday wallet with him so he still had his Hong Kong ID card and UK bank cards). Rebecca had money and a laptop on the table in her room, but they'd left that behind (along with other items she had like her DVD player.) They'd taken her boyfriend Ian's backpack though, which contained his laptop. Strangely they'd also looked at her camera and then decided they didn't want it. I was very lucky in that I was at my Auntie's with my laptop, phone and wallet (I usually lock up my laptop before I leave the house anyway, but clearly the thiefs had managed to deal with all the other locks in our house so it wouldn't have been very effective anyway). The only valuables I had in the house were my digital camera and my passport, and thankfully neither of them had been taken (it took me an hour to get back to the house and I'd assumed that I'd have lost my digi cam anyway, although I knew I was still very lucky and I knew losing my digi cam would be unpleasant but not unmanageable).

My housemates had informed the estate agent soon after calling the police but by the time I got home both the forensics expert (only one policeman came to our house) and the estate agent had left. They'd taken fingerprints so we could go through our stuff, and everyone had to make a statement to an officer over the phone, so I could go to my room straight away:

This is what it looked like:

It's not as bad as it looks. I'd moved some of the furniture in my room earlier, so the main things they'd moved were my mattress (I suppose they assumed I'd hidden some valuables under my mattress?) and they'd taken some clothes out of the top drawer of my closet, and opened two of my drawers. I don't suppose they'd had that much time in my room since they hadn't searched thoroughly- and they'd missed the drawer where my camera was by one. (eep!).

Then I thought that my passport might have been taken because the place I usually keep my passport was empty, but I managed to find that too. I know I was very lucky.

Thankfully Rebecca had room insurance which covered Ian's laptop (he also had insured his laptop) and Alex managed to cancel all this HK cards quickly. Sadly though Gaurav didn't have room insurance- and also of all the things one could possibly lose the *worst* thing people like us could lose would be our laptops- I think we can all imagine how devastating that must be... especially with all the files and memories on them too.

Possessions insurance is common in the UK but I hadn't gotten it either this year because it's sixty pounds for just my room, minus my laptop and mobile- I need to pay extra for my laptop and extra for valuables I take out with me too (I've always expected that it's very likely I'll be mugged on the streets in London, so I've always tried to be careful walking home at night, though I hadn't really thought that our house would be broken into so brutally)- so I'd decided not to get it, since I always locked up and hid everything before I left the house too.

I have to say though that whilst Customer Service in the UK is generally crap the Police officers are at least quite decent. The officer I had to make a statement to actually knew exactly what to say to sound both sympathetic and comforting and he took time to answer all my questions about general advice and how to improve the security of our house too (he suggested a London bar on our door frame which would prevent the lock from being kicked in).

One lock on our main door is kind of loose (having been forced open after all) but the structure and other locks on the main door are fine so it's generally safe for now- the repairmen are coming to replace all the locks (including the ones on me and Rebecca;s rooms that we'd paid for ourselves) and to fix up everythign on Saturday.

It's likely that the reason the door was broken into is because the top lock was locked when we left but the bottom lock was unlocked. The top lock is called a Yale lock that goes into the frame of the lock, but the bottom lock is called a Chub lock and actually goes into the door frame, which is meant to be very, very secure. It's quite sad that this happened because as a household we've generally been trying to be as safe as possible- heck we've got post its on the inside of the front door reminding people to lock both locks before going out, as well as the garden lock and to close all the windows, and I know for a fact that the bottom lock is usually locked so it's very unfortunate that this happened on an off day when the bottom lock wasn't locked.

Creepily enough it happened during the day between 1:30 and 3 pm. I'd have assumed that burglaries would happen during the night, but apparently it's because people are at work during the day. It was unusual that they chose to kick open our door when our door is in an open place that can be seen by people easily- so it is a horrible thought but completely possible that someone has been watching us, and identified that we're a student household with laptops- hence they saw when the house was empty and that the bottom lock was unlocked, making it worth the risk of breaking into very quickly.

All four of us are ok and we're obviously not very happy, but I think we're all alright, considering.

It does make you feel very intruded on when you see your room in disarray and when you imagine stranger walking around in your room and rifling through your stuff. It's a real invasion of personal space. Also, I just found it so hard to comprehend that you could break through a lock so easily:

And I'd never considered the fact that by breaking a doorframe the door would become useless!

Still, I feel very blessed that I was at my Auntie's at the time and she could give me advice straight away ('don't touch anything because they haven't dusted for fingerprints yet.' 'My son's a policeman, call him now and see if he can give you any advice' 'if you don't feel safe there tonight come back and sleep here'). I also managed to call my parents long distance on her phone because I felt I had to let them know what had happened even though I hadn't seen my house yet at that time and I'm so thankful that I have cool parents who never freak out when you call them with something complicated like this. My Dad literally just calmly asked me for all the facts and told me exactly what he advised I should do. Then later Mum called me back to make sure I was alright and also give me more comprehensive advice, like 'if the main lock is damaged don't stay there tonight' 'demand the estate agent install a burglar alarm' 'ask the police for any security advice they can offer' and 'if the main lock's damaged get the number of a 24 hour lock smith'. It's funny because I can usually stay calm when something like this happens, but I know that the moment I hear my parents' voices I'll get all emo, even though I know that it's necessary to call them at times like these. I've only called them one other time this year anyhow.

My second drawer was literally opened like that when I got back- and my digi cam was in the drawer right below it >.< But I suppose my room was the last one they went in because it was locked, so it wasn't checked as thoroughly....

The police also dusted for finger prints and shoe prints: I'd never seen that before!

I'm happy that our household stayed together and supported each other anyhow... Rebecca and Ian went to buy 2 17 inch pizzas so we could all eat together in the kitchen and talk about what happened, and we're also making sure now that no one's alone in the house tonight so there are at least two people in. At least by the end of the night we were able to make a few jokes about some of what had happened, and we're now keeping some of our (remaining!) valuables in a safe place outside of our house, at least until the new locks are properly installed.

I know burglaries aren't as uncommon as we'd think here, because I know of two other people in my year who've been burgled (so sorry to hear that! ) and two other people I know were burgled when they were students too. Even when I lived in Wimbledon with my parents, we experienced an attempted break in- someone smashed a window of ours, but our neighbour heard the noise and looked out of her window, so the thief ran away.

It does show that even though we thought we were rather careful we clearly weren't careful enough (although I know we also shouldn't blame ourselves, of course). Dear former Hong-Kongers, PLEASE be careful. Make sure you lock ALL the locks on your main door when you go out, lock and hide your valuables, and back up your laptop files on an external hard drive that you don't keep in the house. It's probably good to get possessions insurance, although I'm considering finding insurance that just covers my laptop and camera since I don't have many valuables apart from that. It's also advisable to mark your possessions with a UV marker, to consider getting a London bar on your door or a lock on your room (although neither of these are *major* factors) and to be very careful when walking home at night (or during the day): I've been told it helps to have extra change in your pocket so you can at least get home or call someone if you're mugged, and girls who have rape alarms should definitely hold them in their hands rather than keepign them in their bags. Of course it's even better if someone's walking with you.

Times like these also make me really appreciate my auntie who treats me like her daughter. She'd have gone up to Camden with me if it wasn't for the fact that she was working at the time, but she's also calm enough to discuss with me exactly what to do, and (when she saw me getting suddenly teary because I was on the phone) to tell me everything was ok and the important thing was that we were all safe, and that it wasn't our fault because her son and her daughter in law had experienced this at university, too). I'm also happy to have parents who can objectively look at and evaluate *any* problems I've come across in the past few years by never judging me and by telling me the most rational thing to do next. I suppose it reminds me that it's important to be kind to others when they're in need.

Also thank you to all the people who've texted with their support or well-wishes, or tactfully asked about what happened. It meant a lot to all of us.

At the risk of sounding horribly pubescent and immature...

Sigh. You want to mess with me? Well bring it *on* you stupid cow.

It's not the hugest of deals, but adulthood really is a bitch sometimes...

*

Although The Postal Service's 'Who's Afraid of the Big Bad World' is a simple but kind of cheerful tune to do things to. :) Thanks S.B~

In an attempt to show how the celebrity look-alike site is a scam (ok fine, the real reason is because I was bored and didn't want to use my brain-cells reading) I tried it out with three *different* pictures.

According to the site, the first attempt should have worked the best because I used a big, front-facing picture...

Kind of weird how they're all foreign- and I don't *know* who half these people are! But, looking like Jodie Foster cannot be a bad thing... =]

Second try though- with a picture taken maybe a month/ a month and a half after that. Suddenly half of them are Asian? I mean admittedly a 75% match isn't that much- but it's still pretty funny... (and what's Mandy Moore doing there? o_0)

With a photo taken a week after that though....

I mean in the space of a month my matches turn from Western to Asian... and in the space of a week I change from female to male? And he's a *young* boy, too! >.< (even though he got to act with Jessica Alba...)

Siew sei yan lah...

"I like my life precisely because most of it hasn't happened yet."

What do you do when you're bored and have tonnes of work to do? That's right, procrastinate. And in my case, get so bored I start compiling one of those "13 years from now" lists (13 because I'm 17 right now).  Completely arbitrary, and anyone not mentioned I either forgot about, or couldn't decide on their future. Don't kill me!

13 years from now

Aveline, Christopher- Still surfing away on some sunny shore¡K=D

Bechmanis, Sarah- The best thing Broadway¡¦s ever seen. =) A gift to Broadway. Occasionally performs with Christine.

Bury, Michelle- Plays hockey. Can shoot like no one¡¦s business. In her thirties she becomes a PE teacher in an international school and trains a bunch of silly girls into a team of tough players.

Broyelle, Emilie- The latest Hollywood sensation. Does both French and English movies and designs her own clothes too!

Barreira, Teresa & Wong, Eutine- will be successful in whatever they do¡Kjust look at all those activities they do =P

Barlow, Jessica- World¡¦s number one designer. Most famous creation is a series of punk barbies that suddenly make barbies cool.

Chiu, Melissa- still hyper and still tall. V. successful in law (is it law she¡¦s taking for uni?) since she works so hard (as demonstrated in the Voice Team)

Cheng, Carmen- will also be successful in whatever she does since she works so hard. Boys will probably also continue to be dazzled. =P

Choir girls, the- having all become musical, well-balanced and mature (yeah, right) girls from Yips such as Katherine, Frankie, Elaine, Bonnie, Priscilla, Erica, Tiffany, Denise, Patricia and Addiped (help! Did I forget anyone? Probably) conquer the world through working in the arts and government sectors. Addiped also becomes a star footballer and a TV host who disses, dismisses and debates.

Chan, Daniel- Happily married biochemical researcher who loves his work and is about to publish a hit book that is a style similar to his xanga entries, featuring science, running, maths and spirituality =P

Chan, Ivy- Is the hk government minister in charge of arts and culture (remember that prediction the fortune teller made? Only you said ¡§no! Political figures get ugly caricatures drawn of them¡K.¡¨) funding the Arts Centre. Her alter-ego is actually secretly a trendy artist who has a gallery in Central, and a column in HK magazine reviewing movies and art exhibitions¡Kthough she doesn¡¦t let the reporters know about her other identity of course =P

Chan, Iris- Teaches ballet at The Place in England. As well as dazzling the sudden influx of young male dancers she is also a key figure in the local indie music scene, helping budding young bands get publicity by finding venues for them to perform in.

Chan, Emily- is obviously a famous, talented doctor. She takes 4 standards, after all. =)

Chau, Yu-xi- Professor of physics/ science researcher somewhere famous, who constantly is interviewed for his views on current affairs, even though he¡¦s a science teacher. Still plays badminton and go.

Cheong, Jessica- is smart enough to be President. But likes rockclimbing better

Cheung, Ada- Works in the UN, dealing with Health Care issues and writing resolutions =) She will probably be the Secretary-General someday.

Cheung, Nicky- graduates top of her class and becomes an English professor.

Cheung, Ying-wah- works as a journalist or in publishing. Blatantly biased as she promotes all of her friends¡¦ companies/galleries/performances/practises by stuffing them into articles.

Cheung, Yanlap- is a maths teacher who talks and works like Mr. Taylor. XD

Chui, Christine- Happily married, and the most popular teacher at X middle school due to her teaching skills, niceness and humour. Reveals her ¡§wild side¡¨ in a way similar to Mr. Lewis- performing in the theatre.

Chow, Jennifer- Highly paid health-and-lifestyle adviser to celebrities, giving them advice about food and exercise, etc. Volunteers as a lifeguard, and the occasional brown deer in Christine¡¦s productions

Chow, Tony- May or may not be a lawyer. (how about a higher education adviser? XD) but is obviously extremely successful in whatever he does. Helps Perry coach students in debating in his spare time.

Chung, Christina- this one¡¦s obvious. Archaeologist and wacky curator/ board member of either the Louvre or the British Museum, practically living in the place. Has also published two well-received, intellectual books on theology and one on psychology and society.

Chung, Hiu Yee- the cutest doctor in her district who occasionally plays pranks on msn on unsuspecting friends between shifts

Chung, Jennifer- Mr. Langford-Smith¡¦s prediction came true: Jen is the cute (albeit ¡§in a vague way¡¨ XD) and frequently drunk editor of the Features Section of a newspaper, starting off as a lowly reporter but flying up to the top quickly once people see how great her articles are.

Coombes, Matthew- Due to terrorist activities he is on the FBI¡¦s ¡§Most Wanted¡¨ list, but is granted governmental protection in Cuba, which loves him. His riveting speeches (among other things) keep the crowds enthralled and ensure he has a large following of minions at his beck and call.

Debating Society, The- Obviously, everyone who learnt skills from debating ends up rich and successful, or at least they write very good essays (¡§Structure!¡¨)

Foster, Holly- Happily married Most Successful Business Woman of the Year- The Economist chronicles her rise that began with Wolly¡¦s. Less well-documented talents include extensive knowledge into the word ¡§cuckoldry¡¨, and singing ¡§Bananas in Pajamas¡¨ on table tops

Ge, Perry- Former UN worker, eventually decides he¡¦d rather spend his time corrupting younger minds and hence becomes a philosophy tutor in Oxford. All the students love him, but the media bemoans alleged ¡§declining English standards¡¨ in Oxford due to the rise of words such as ¡§ghetto¡¨. Runs the debating society as well (duh!)

Granberg, Karl- Still nice, funny, talented and able to speak Chinese =P. Doing something church-related and having a really meaningful life.

Ha, Victoria- PRS teacher who¡¦s extremely skilled in boy-bashing =)

Ho, Jeffrey- is a doctor living in Manhattan, often seen at Lillian¡¦s parties where he shocks everyone with his suggestions. XD

Ho, Edwina- is a brain surgeon (well they make a lot of money right?) who loves wearing Roxy. She has a very ¡§hou wah¡¨ wedding somewhere =P

Hui, Rachel- barely needs elaboration. Top barrister in England.

Jin, Jennifer- Happily married and as a top¡KI have no idea, but I can picture her in a white lab coat so a scientist? Obviously will still be v. sporty and so probably coach of her lab¡¦s volley ball team or something =P

Johnston, Cathryn- Successful horse-trainer, despite pleas from both the UN and the FBI for her to work for them.

Jia, Sally- Happily married. Graduates with first honours in biochemistry but then decides to ditch that and start a hit manga series with Janet instead.

Khadka, Dikshya- happily married to a hot guy. =P Lives somewhere with an internet connection so she can keep in touch with everyone. Either a businesswoman or a doctor; really independent and smart either way. Wears green contacts.

Kwok, Cindy- works in a hospital in Hong Kong, making tonnes of money and enjoying watching everything get cut apart in the operation room =D

Kwok, Cathy- Lives in Britain and runs a successful business. Occasionally drops by Christine and Sarah¡¦s drama productions to put make up on the actors.

Khid-An, Pawit- is happily married to a penguin researcher and hence spends a few months each year camping in the Antarctic with her during her research periods. Obviously he takes his laptop with him and manages to continue ¡§work¡¨ (as a columnist for the online, younger, straight version of Dan Savage) via the internet. He also plans to become president and make pink-wear compulsory once he is old enough.

Lau, Sarah- works as a great doctor who helps lots of people. She represents her profession in the Doctor¡¦s Union and takes over Sam Greenland¡¦s position when he retires to run Open House Debating and train the Hong Kong team.

Leung, Tina- the hottest forensics investigator in town (think the sexy ladies from Cold Case or CSI or wherever). Also dabbles in bio and psychology; lives in an apartment near the other Clovers and hence continues to be on KFC¡¦s blacklist.

Lo, Amata- successful economist, earns enough money to buy a good bed, and has enough time to contribute to galleries and display her work in Jane¡¦s magazine. Also hosts a few gothy websites online with dodgy domain names. On the KFC blacklist, for obvious reasons.

Li, Jonathan- Famous and successful but still spends far too much time thinking about Final Fantasy¡KXD lol jk

Li, Jane- Fellow Artist in the happy Central art gallery community. Jets to Manhattan a lot. Also edits a classy fashion/lifestyle magazine and is frequently seen in the Society pages of newspapers.

Lui, Janel- Architect. Just like Norman Foster. Jets all over the world, but is still on the KFC blacklist. Jets to England especially often for some reason¡K

Lo, Hans- In his younger years he joins a band with Annie and Owen, with the hit song ¡§normed¡¨. He is nearly arrested on one occasion as police suspect he is doing drugs- though it turns out only to be a severe wasabi dose. Winds up as one of the overpaid people in the ICT/ software industry.

Lee, Chi Ching- Happily married. Successful and cute lawyer who everyone loves.

Lau, Jeanne- famous lawyer who can¡¦t help saying ¡§penis¡¨ and slapping people¡¦s bums in court. Luckily her skills mean that this only makes her popular amongst her clients and Time magazine names her as the ¡§woman who has livened up the court room the most¡¨

Lo, Jenny- beats Michael Jordan at basketball.

Lineham, Owen- After the band disbands he finds himself teaching chem to a bunch of international school kids. The boys love how he burns or blows things up on purpose whilst the young girls stalk him.

Li, Maria- is a popular radio talk show host and DJ. But her favourite hobbies are debating and shopping =)

Me, Clara- Highly paid vet in Canada. Writes fantasy, romance, and general boy bashing novels in her spare time that make her a brand name. Still gorgeous enough to be a model but the neighbours can¡¦t help wondering about where she learnt those martial arts skills and why she sneaks out at night wearing boots with spikes and holding a stake¡K

Miyazaki, Annie- is the popular drummer of a hit band until she gets bored, drops the band stuff and becomes a rich artist living in an airy loft in France.

Mitchell, Victoria- Will be a rich and talented psychologist, although I¡¦ve actually always pictured her as a fashion designer. Features frequently in the Society pages in the SCMP.

Nayak, Gaurav- does something bio-chem related by day, and is the male version of Cassandra Claire by night. Was nearly arrested along with Hans in the wasabi incident- something he is proud of.

Ng, Timothy- Sets up a rival psychology practise opposite Calvin¡¦s. They¡¦re both equally successful, but a lot of the client¡¦s Calvin¡¦s been through with go to Tim to reverse the damage done¡K=P

Ng, Frankie- Highly successful engineering graduate who travels between England and Hong Kong. She continues to enjoy concerts, cantopop and does a variety of jobs: engineering, teaching and working in the music industry.

Ng, Serena- The cutest paediatrician in Australia- kids love her! Lots of older boys also pretend to be ¡§kids¡¨ to try and get a check up and a chance to see her- but of course she gets security to kick all of them out.

Pang, Phyllis- Starts off as an economist, becomes a famous clothing designer, ends up with a PR company. Yes, stop complaining, you will. Is especially known for funny quirks and starting several fashion trends. Her husband does the washing for her =)

Price, David- I don¡¦t need to say this one. Tv host. Geography programme. Like that Lonely Planet dude. Duh!

Pun, Arnold- Evil CEO of an evil company, known for a complete lack of morals and a very dodgy dresscode for the secretaries. XD Self-esteem reaches its peak when he manages to get an article published in the Economist but eventually scandal after scandal forces him to abandon plans for world domination and instead buy a conscience and work as a doctor in a charity in Africa

Pun, Candy- starts off as a dancer/performer for local concerts and ends up in the hotel industry running a chain of posh hotels.

Rowe, Andrew- stand up comedian.

Ren, Jing Wen- Fellow artist with works displayed in the Central galleries, France and Japan.

Shaw, Benjamin- Plays rugby and participates regularly in events like Stride for a Cure and the Sedan Chair Race. Was recently spotted running up another hill on the AYP trail ¡§for fun¡¨ (WHY? WHY did you do that?).

So, Stephanie- Happily married and the head of Sri Lankan Airlines. =)

Suff, Laura- Happily married with tonnes of beautiful babies and an architecture company called ¡§Buff¡¨ (or something else)

Tang, Derek- According to Owen¡¦s prediction, ¡§president of the US¡¨ =P But 30¡¦s a bit young for that, so Derek will probably be a top engineer at¡Ksomewhere (don¡¦t know a thing about engineering) for now who earns a lot (hah) and continues to promote the virtues of Singapore, the US, and the sciences over the humanities.

Tang, Reuben- Sarcastic film critic who slaughters everything he doesn¡¦t like and gushes about special effects. His less-known alter-ego works in a charity organisation, going abroad on foreign missions.

Tang, Lillian- Happily married. Lives in a trendy apartment in Manhattan a la Sex and the City, throws the coolest parties around and cooks a lot.

Tang, Simone- is the chief executive of Hong Kong. Obviously she is 10 x 10000 times more popular than the current chief executive, and 10 x 10000 times more competent too.

Tsang, Charles-Happily married architect with 4 beautiful kids who he teaches to play football.

Tse, Denise- Expertise in lit makes her an English teacher and she is also the nicest Debating Coach in Canada.

Tse, Felix- Happily married. Takes over his parent¡¦s business and hence gets to drive around in a swanky car a lot.

Tai, Michael- Accountant?...or whatever. Happily married guy who has lots of fun in life, although all the neighbours keep an eye on their dogs¡K

Tai, Rachal- After graduating from uni she tries cheerleading, working for a charity and working in PR. She continues to be annoyed by Yanlap.

Tse, Janet- Happily married. Runs the hit manga series with Sally, but posts up tonnes of artwork for free on websites such as deviant art as well. Loves sending spam to Derek and Leo and telling reporters of how ¡§they posed together for this really sweet pic in year 7¡Kand then started fighting again once the shot was over!¡¨

Voice Team, The- continues drawing and writing =)

Woo, Alice- Has a gallery beside Jane¡¦s.

Wu, Calvin- Happily married and still annoying. Is an overpaid Freudian psychologist who asks clients to tell him about their childhood and then sneaks out for a drink during their rant.

Wong, Leo- Top economics expert and writer/editor of the economist. Was previously head of the WHO, but got bored of talking to novices in the UN so went his own way.

Wu, Nana- was Time magazine¡¦s woman of the year due to her breakthrough in her research in genetical engineering for plants, giving her a reputation that rivals that of Einstein. =)
